How It Started
As co-founders of the Kenya Scoliosis Relief Initiative, our journey began during our internship at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital in Mombasa, Kenya. Despite originating from different regions of the United States, our paths converged as we connected through this shared chapter in our lives. Each of us had different experiences during our respective hospital rotations, yet our collective drive was fueled by a shared aspiration—to impact and support a community that graciously embraced us into their culture.
Inspired by the community's kindness, our hearts were set on initiating a program that could positively impact their health. During our internships, several of us had firsthand encounters with children afflicted by untreated scoliosis while shadowing under the guidance of Dr. Kennedy Mutinda in the pediatrics department. With Dr. Ken's invaluable support and encouragement, the vision of the Kenya Scoliosis Relief Initiative blossomed.
We would like to thank the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital and International Medical Aid for allowing us the opportunity to learn and discuss global access to quality health care. Their work has allowed us to come together to build imperative efforts that would not have otherwise been initiated.
